City Of God

What is the importance of mise-en-scene and/or sound in creating meaning and generating response in the films you have studied

In City Of God mise en scène is important in the story of the apartment scene. The scene is a montage scene that shows the decay of an apartment in the fevellas used to sell drugs from. The apartment is owned by four different people, Donna Zelia, Big Boy, Carrot and Blackie, over a period of twenty years. At the beginning of the scene the apartment is shown as very clean and neat and it s also owned by a woman, named Dona Zelia. The apartment is shown like this to show that at the time life in the fevellas was a lot cleaner because there was less drug usage. Dona Zeloa is then thrown out of the apartment by Big Boy. This shows that women in the fevellas do not have a voice or an opinion. When Dona Zelia and Big Boy first have the apartment a filter is used to make the apartment seem a lot brighter but as the apartment changes hands the apartment slowly becomes duller and darker. This shows that the apartment has gone from the home of a mother to a drug den. In the scene when Big Boy is telling carrot that he has to kill his friend Aristotle low key lighting is used to show how carrot doesn’t want to kill his friend but has to because in the fevellas it is kill or be killed. The whole scene fits in with the recurring motif that a big fish will come and eat the little fish because every drug dealer that is using the apartment gets taken over by bigger and more powerful drug dealer.

Mise en scene and sound are also important in the story of Lil’l Ze. The story of Lil’l Ze starts when he was Lil’l Dice at the motel robbery. In this scene you see Lil’l Dice kill for the first time. When Lil’l Dice kills for the first time it is different to when other people kill for the first time. This is because when you see other characters kill for the first time, like carrot, they close their eyes or look away and wince when they pull the trigger. When Lil’l Dice kills he laughs at the fact he has killed people. This shows that Li’l Dice has been desensitised to violence. After this we see Li’l Dice and Benny sitting on bricks outside the city of god. The bricks in this scene signify the foundations of the city and by sitting on them it shows that Li’l Dice will become a major power in the city of god. We then see Goose show up and take money away from Li’l Dice and Benny. When Goose is doing this he slaps Li’l Dice. As this happens you see a close up of Li’l Dice’s face and you hear a very high pitched noise in the background. This shows that Li’l Dice is angry with Goose and won’t let him get away with hitting him. You then see Goose jump over some bricks to leave but is then called back by Li’l Dice and shot. This shows that Goose got close to being able to leave the city but was called back by being offered a gun. This fits with the recurring motif that you cannot escape the city of god and the hoodlum lifestyle.

La Haine

What is the importance of misè en scene and or sound in creating meaning and generating response in the films you have studied

In Hubert’s bedroom scene Mise en scene is important because it shows you how Americanised it is in the banlieus of France. In the scene you can see many different posters on Hubert’s wall. One of these posters is of the 1968 Olympic black power salute. This shows that Hubert has been americanised. As well as this you can also see lots of boxing posters and memorabilia all from America but you never see any French culture in Hubert’s room. In the scene you also hear Hubert Listening to American soul music. This shows that Hubert is once again americanised but also shows that Hubert himself has a soul. While the Soul music is playing you see a montage of Hubert cutting up hash and then rolling and smoking a joint. This shows that drugs are not something that the people who live in the banlieus can escape from. You then see a mid shot oh Hubert looking out of his window at the people on the street below him. This is shot as a mid shot with the frame of the window in shot which gives you the idea that Hubert, and everyone else, is trapped in the outskirts of France and that they will never get out.

The next scene is of the DJ scratching the records in his room. In this scene you see the records spinning round which fits in with the recurring motif, which runs throughout the film, of everything going round in a circle. In this scene you also see a mid shot from behind the DJ in which you can see that on the back of his t-shirt it says cypress hill. Cypress Hill are a multicultural rap group from America. This again shows that everyone in the banlieus has been americanised but also that all the people in the banlieus are multicultural just like the rap group Cypress hill. The DJ then starts playing a remix of a French version of the NWA song fuck the police and Non je ne regrette rien (no regrets) by Edith Piaf. This is one of the only references to French culture throughout the film. This shows that there is very little French culture left in the banlieus because it has all been americanised. While the song is playing you see a bird’s eye view shot, taken from a drone, going over the banlieus. This shot was used to show the vastness of the Banlieus and also how all of the apartment blocks in the banlieus are set out in circles. This fits in with the recurring motif of everything going round in circles and there not being any escape from the lives the three characters live.

small scale research project

Characters searching for a truth is a common theme in David Finchers films, does this make him an auteur?

Item 1- Gone Girl (2014)
I chose this film as my focus film because it show David Finchers as an auteur by dealing with the theme of characters searching for a truth. In this film the main character searches for the truth which drives the narrative of the film. This film also explores the themes of love and marriage, times of uncertainty and struggle and media exploitation. Gone Girl is also part of the psychological thriller which is part of his iconic style.

Item 2- Seven (1995)
I chose this as my second film because it also shows how David Fincher could be considered an auteur due to his use of the theme of searching for truth. This film is also a psychological thriller so contains many of the same conventions as Gone Girl.

Item 3- Zodiac (1999)
I chose this third film again because it shows David FInchers characters trying to search for the truth. Once again this film is part of the psychological thriller genre which Gone Girl and Fight Club are part of and also many other of David FInchers films.

Item 4- Pocket Essentials-Andrew Buttler
This book is useful because the book has a chapter on auteur theory and how it started. This is useful because in my question i an asking wether or not David Fincher is an auteur.

Item 5- David Fincher Films That Scar- Mark Browning
This book will be useful because it contains quotes as to why Fincher is considered an auteur that I can use in my presentation script.

Item 6- Indielondon interview http://www.indielondon.co.uk/Film-Review/zodiac-david-fincher-interview
This interview is useful because David FIncher talks about the themes in his films. I can use quotes from this article in my presentation script to prove that he is an auteur.

Item 7- Sight and Sound magazine Fight Club article

Item 8- Sight and Sound magazine Zodiac article
This article will be used firstly because it is an article about zodiac and secondly because it contains an interview with Fincher that I can use quotes from.

Item 9- what does David Fincher not do documentary

Visuals effects are a main attraction for audiences'. How far do you agree with this statement?

visual effects can be an attraction or some audience members. this is proven by films such as Life of Pi and Interstellar, which have both won awards for their special effects. Interstellar took $672.2 million at the box office but its success could also be because of the stars in the film. These include Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine. Stars are important to films because people go to see films that have people in that they recognise and have seen in other films. another reason films may be successful other than visual effects is franchises. If a film is a franchise, such as Iron Man or the Fast and Furious films, then people are more likely to go and see it. This is because people have seen the previous films and are familiar with the characters in the films. Fast and Furious 7, the latest in the franchise, has just become one of the fastest films to ever reach $1 billion. This is because of firstly it being a franchise and secondly because one of the stars, Paul Walker, died during he production of the film so his face was put onto his brothers face using visual effects to finish the rest of the ilm. this made the film popular because people were interested to see how the film was done without the star.

On the other hand visual effects are not a main attraction for a lot of audience members. This is proven by films such as whiplash, an American independent film, which made a total gross of $6,155,000. whiplash does not have any stars in it but it was nominated for awards and J.K Simmons won an oscar for best supporting role. This makes films more popular because people see the film on television and see that it has been nominated for awards so they go and see it. Films with high budgets can also fail, this is proven by the film John Carter. John Carter was a Disney movie with a budget of $263.7 million and only made $284.1 million in the box office. The film failed because it spent a lot of its budget on the special effects for the film but not a lot on the advertising. This made the film fail because it was a big budget film that no one had heard of so it failed. Another reason that some people go to see a film, other than visual effects, is advertisement. films such as The Dark Knight have had very successful viral campaigns that attracts audiences by making websites, posters and television adverts. Things like this make people want to watch the film because adverts make films look appealing and viral campaigns usually get the fans of the films involved which makes them want to watch the film.
